2016-2017 Rehabilitation Project

Our 2016 rehabilitation project (pictured and described below) focused on the upper story shingles and required extensive scaffolding.  In 2017 we focused on the ground level shingles and other wooden structures such as decks and rails. The 2017 effort included:

• Shingles were showing wear, as well as splitting, warping, and fading of paint due to weather and sun damage. Our goal was to repair or replace damaged, split shingles with shingles of the same cedar wood and varied-width-cut as the original shingles. We used the hand cut shingles that were saved from our 2016 restoration of the exterior building.  All existing shingles not replaced or painted in 2016, mainly on the ground floor, were cleaned, prepped and painted on the four sides of the building. The paint color was matched using the same formula from past restorations.

• The paint on handrails, decking, stairs and stoops was peeling, also due to weather and sun damage.  Exterior handrails, stairs, steps stoops and decks were sanded, patched and prepped in areas where needed. They were also painted with matching historic colors and paint formulations appropriate for the material and intended use.

• We also repaired, prepped and painted an interior kitchen beam and ceiling area that was damaged by a leak in the roof.  We used historic colors so that the damage was no longer visible.
